A report released by the American Gaming Association has suggested that in 2009, slots revenue in Illinois was down by 8.4%, to $1.2 billion, when compared with previous yearly results. The report, which was released on Monday, has noted that four key gambling markets in the United States, including Illinois, as well as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, have all reported a downturn in slots revenue.
Te figures released by the American Gaming Association have led insiders to speculate that the slots industry in Illinois will return to growth. When compared with results from 2008, which saw 21.7% drop in slots revenue in Illinois, it could be suggested that Illinois, along with other gambling industries in the US, have weathered the worst of the recent economic problems. Visitor totals also suggest that more players are returning to casinos, albeit slowly. In 2008, Illinois gambling venues recorded a decline of 11.4% in visits. In 2009, visitor levels are down just 1.5%.
However, while the recession is over in the United States, it’s clear that it will be sometime before the slots industry fully recovers and returns to financial growth.
