Judge Barry Kramer will decide today whether the New York Lottery Division can award a lucrative slots contract to the Malaysia based casino operators, Genting. The contract, which would allow a casino operator to provide 4,500 slots at the New York Aqueduct Racetrack, was previously awarded to Aqueduct Entertainment Company (AEC).
However, the contract was put up for bidding again, after the Lottery Division rejected the bid by AEC. After losing the contact, AEC sued and won a restraining order, effectively preventing the Lottery Division from awarding the contract to another bidder.
Now, Judge Kramer will have to decide whether to continue with the restraining order, or allow lottery officials in New York to award the contract to Genting, the only remaining bidder. The New York Racing Association has made clear that they may run into financial problems next year, if slots aren’t introduced at the Aqueduct Racetrack.
